Virtual Production Company Orbital Studios Signs With CAA

Orbital Studios, a film and television production studio specializing in end-to-end virtual production services, has signed with CAA.

Orbital Studios leverages cutting-edge technology to create dynamic virtual environments that blend with real-world performance.  Working with producers, cinematographers, directors, and production designers, the company has collaborated on such productions as the FX series “Snowfall” and “Justified: City Primeval,” plus the History Channel’s “History’s Greatest Heists With Pierce Brosnan.”

“As Orbital Studios continues to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation for storytellers, CAA will be an integral partner in our strategic growth,” said Orbital co-founder and chief creative officer A.J. Wedding.

Orbital’s vice president of business development Brian Nitzkin added, “Orbital is well positioned to be a catalyst for wider adoption of virtual production methods, providing industry-wide access to tools that both transform and optimize the way that all forms of media are produced.”

Founded in 2021, the Los Angeles-based Orbital Studios is comprised of a team of seasoned filmmaking professionals and has become a driving force in virtual production. In addition to FX and the History Channel, the company has worked with Disney+, Hulu, A&E, Sony, Epic Games and EA Sports, as well as brands such as Hummer and Mercedes-Benz.

Through its extensive network of partners, including Dell Technologies, NVIDIA, ROTU Entertainment, Narwhal Studios, Colorlight, OptiTrack, The Studio – B&H, Planar and Unreal Engine, Orbital has fused technology with efficiency.

Virtual production can significantly cut costs and rude carbon footprint, as “Snowfall” virtual production supervior Wedding explained to Variety in 2022. “We were able to identify several areas of cost savings and work with them on the workflow changes so that they could achieve the looks they wanted without out-of-control location costs. In the end, the crew loved getting to stay on stage, and the directors and DPs were able to pick any time of day or weather conditions they wanted to see. It created an artistic playground.”

Orbital Studios is the latest in a string of buzzy CAA signings that include “Anatomy of a Fall” Oscar winner Justine Triet, “Westworld” co-creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, “The Vampire Diaries” co-creator Julie Plec, emerging filmmaker Margaret Zhang, along with performers including Tilda Swinton, Mike Faist, J.B. Smoove, Kit Harrington, Elizabeth Olsen and John C. Reilly.
